an introduction to taekwondo for people with cerebral palsy

British Taekwondo has partnered with Cerebral Palsy Sport to create an Introduction to Taekwondo for people with Cerebral Palsy

We’ve partnered with Cerebral Palsy Sport to create an Introduction to Taekwondo for people with Cerebral Palsy. This resource has been produced by highly specialist paediatric physiotherapist, Judy Deen and Cerebral Palsy Sport in partnership with British Taekwondo with support from members, coaches and athletes.  Not only does this resource provide advice on adapting your teaching of specific Taekwondo exercises and techniques, but also discusses the various adaptations you can make to your club.

This resource also shows a Case Study of Samantha Carrington’s journey to be a 3-time World Champion and Great Britian Para Poomsae Athlete.

Samantha discusses how she began Taekwondo shortly after finishing physiotherapy and how the adaptations created by coaches and instructors to training sessions helped her on her journey.

This resource will be hosted on the Disability Resources page, on the newly released Equity, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EEDI) section of our website. Here, you can find information about making Taekwondo more accessible to many diverse communities. We’ll also be creating further resources, like this one, in the future. On this webpage, you can also find an Introduction to Taekwondo for Blind and Partially Sighted People, where you can learn how to adapt your training sessions to include those with a visual impairment.

The Introduction to Taekwondo for people with Cerebral Palsy resource will give coaches and instructors a better understanding of the needs of those with Cerebral Palsy. We’ve worked with Cerebral Palsy Sport to not only raise awareness of the ways in which people with Cerebral Palsy can enjoy Taekwondo, but to also provide our coaches with an effective toolkit to making a lasting difference through this sport.

By its nature, Taekwondo is inclusive and attracts players, coaches, volunteers, and officials from a diverse range of communities and British Taekwondo’s role within this is to ensure that everyone is provided with a positive experience. By creating this resource, we can pass on important knowledge to our instructors to make their club a safe and welcoming space for those people with Cerebral Palsy.

If you want to know more about what you can do to make your club accessible to those with a Cerebral Palsy, please make use of the helpful information and courses recommended within the resource.
